Osor is an ancient city at the crossroads of land and sea routes. The location at the junction between the islands of Losinj and Cres was a condition for the creation of this settlement, its prosperity and later its collapse.
The channel that divides the island today was made during Roman rule. The town of Osor is known as an open-air museum town, as traces of the ancient past are visible at every turn. Osor got the form of a real city in the ancient era, and at that time it also reached its largest extent - from the canal (Kavuada) to the Bay of Bijar. Osor had an ancient street layout. The remains of ancient floor mosaics are located in the area of the Osor cemetery, where it was probably a cult space since prehistoric times. Osor's cathedral with a baptistery was built in this area in the 5th - 6th centuries. In Osor, the largest Romanesque complex is the Basilica of St. Peter, which is connected with the spread of Benedictines on the Kvarner islands. The three-nave basilica was built in the 11th century. The Benedictine monastery that was here ceased to exist in the 15th century. The current Osor, in addition to being a museum town, also offers other, mainly touristic, offers.
In addition to accommodation in private rooms and two campsites, there are several restaurants, a travel agency, shops, a post office and more. In Osor, it is most lively from mid-July to mid-August, during the duration of the Osor music evenings.
