A walk through Opatija wouldn't be perfect without stopping by the city's sculptures and taking many pictures. There are many stories and some interesting facts about them. They are the famous statues of Opatija.
The most celebrated statues are the statue of Miroslav Krzela, statue of Isadora Duncan, statue of Jan Kubelik and the statue of the Girl with the Seagull. Above the city's popular Slatina Beach, right on the Lungomare coastal promenade, you will see a statue of Miroslav Krleza, the most important Croatian writer and intellectual of the 20th century. Miroslav Krleza (1893-1981) was a prominent figure in cultural life of both Yugoslav states, the Socialist Republic and the United Kingdom. He was born in Zagreb. He was novelist, poet, playwright, philosopher, cultural critic and essayist. In front of the beautiful Remisens Premium Villa Amalia, you will see a statue of a dancer on the move, the remarkable Isadora Duncan. She liked Opatija very much and used to stay in this villa. The fluttering of Opatija's palms inspired her dance movements. The statue of the violinist Jan Kubelik is situated in front of the historical Villa Angiolina. He used to find revelation for his work while enjoying town's sea and sun.
The Opatija's most recognisable symbol is the famous Girl with the Seagull. There is probably no passer-by or tourist or who hasn't taken a photo of this attractive sculpture of a girl watching the blue Kvarner sea.
