Pazin is the largest town in the interior of Istria. It is the seat of the Istrian County, a cultural and economic center located in the very center of the peninsula. It developed at the bottom of the basin, but for defensive reasons it stands on the edge of a natural barrier, a large chasm into which the Pazina stream flows.
The town of Pazin has always played an important role in the history of Istria due to its location in the center of the peninsula. It was also important because of the route from the hilly eastern Istria along the valley of Pazinsko potok and Limska draga to the west and along the middle of the peninsula to the south towards Pula. The old part of the city developed next to the castle, which was built 130 meters above the abyss of Jama (Fojba). The picturesque Pazin Cave is also located here. The newer part of the town is spread over a flatter area. In the past, Pazin was an administrative center, an important crossroads and a trade center. The railway line Divaca - Pula runs through the city. The biggest cultural attractions are the old castle or fortress, the parish church of St. Nicholas, a Franciscan monastery with a church and several war monuments. The old castle dates back to around the 9th century, and it got its current form between the 13th and 16th centuries. Today it houses a museum, and from time to time exhibitions of various works of art are held.
The parish church was built in the 13th century, it was extended in 1441 and then expanded in the Baroque style in the 18th century. A separate bell tower was built in 1705. In the Franciscan monastery with the church (1463 – 1477) there is a rich library and sacral art paintings on the main altar.
