Buzet is located on top of a hill in the upper part of the Mirna river valley. It lies in the middle of central Istria, below the peaks of Cicarija. The older part of the settlement is traditionally built on an isolated hill, while the newer part, Fontana, is located at the foot.
Buzet stands at the crossroads and because of this it has always played an important traffic role. Administratively Buzet has the status of a city, the center of an area dotted with several smaller settlements. In the Roman period there was a settlement Pinquentum, in the Middle Ages a fortress. Buzet gets its present appearance in the Venetian era, when the city fortifications were built. Residential buildings were later upgraded to the city walls. Two city gates have been preserved - the main south gate from 1547 and the north gate from 1592. On the main square, which is a flattened plate carved in living stone, stands the parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, restored in 1784 and decorated with interesting interior.
In the vicinity of Buzet there are some smaller churches, which are the Church of St. Anton, Church of St. Jurij, Church of St. John and Church of St. Mary Magdalena. Medieval cemeteries were discovered below the town. In Buzet, livestock farming used to be the main source of the economy, and today industry and tourism are developing.
