Buzet - Fontico

In northern Croatian Istria, BuzetBuzet links a fortified hilltop with the newer town on the Mirna plain. The Old Town preserves walls, two gates, narrow lanes, churches, palaces and public cisterns within a compact fortified settlement. Despite its small scale, the core contains a remarkably varied group of fortifications, palaces, churches and water reservoirs. The town depended not only on its defences but also on public grain reserves for periods of shortage.

The Fontico is a former Venetian grain store in Buzet - Old Townold Buzet. It was built in 1534 and renovated in 1587, when civic grain reserves helped bridge shortages.

The plain building with wooden shutters faces a narrow street. Around 1900 the space also became a public hall, extending its story beyond its original storage function.

As a public granary, Fontik helped regulate supplies during shortages. Its later conversion into a social hall shows the building’s continuing civic role after storage ceased.
