Buzet - Mannerist Portal

BuzetBuzet lies in northern inland Croatian Istria above the upper Mirna River valley. The town grew from prehistoric and Roman settlement into a medieval fortress, while Venetian rule strongly marked its present stone appearance. Visitors can read the town’s history directly in its portals, coats of arms, inscriptions and different layers of walling. In the densely built lanes, a single finely carved portal can reveal an entire historical period.

The Mannerist portal in Buzet - Old Townold Buzet dates from the first third of the 17th century. Geometrically carved blocks articulate the stone arch, with a coat of arms at its crown.

The portal leads into a small inner courtyard and is best read at close range. The gallery therefore separates the complete entrance from a detail of its stone carving.

The count’s emblem and the treatment of the stone blocks distinguish the portal from simpler nearby entrances. It is a small but clear example of Mannerist decoration applied to urban domestic architecture.
