Buzet - Bell Tower

Buzet lies in northern inland Croatian Istria above the upper Mirna River valley. The town grew from prehistoric and Roman settlement into a medieval fortress, while Venetian rule strongly marked its present stone appearance. Visitors can read the town’s history directly in its portals, coats of arms, inscriptions and different layers of walling. A freestanding bell tower rises above the main square and roofs as one of Buzet’s clearest landmarks.

The freestanding bell tower stands beside the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary and rises above the roofs of old Buzet. It received its present form during the 1897 rebuilding.

The tower contains an older bell bearing the year 1541 in Glagolitic numerals. Its tall stone body is one of the principal landmarks of the town skyline.

The bell dated 1541 predates the present tower and demonstrates continuity of bell-ringing on the main square. Its detached position makes the tower an urban landmark rather than merely an appendage to the church.
