Buzet - Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Buzet lies in north-eastern Croatian Istria on a strategic hill above the Mirna valley. Within the small Old Town, a medieval plan, Venetian government, sacred architecture and urban water infrastructure stand side by side. Its compact urban form reveals defence, religion, water supply and daily life within a single walking route. The religious and artistic focus of the upper town is the main square with its parish church.

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary stands on the main square of old Buzet. The present church was completed in 1784; its bright interior contains the high altar, side altars, pulpit and paintings.

Notable features include the 1787 organ by Gaetano Callido and the church treasury. A separate bell tower stands beside the church, so the two are treated as distinct sights.

The church is a single-nave building with side chapels, set with its square on living rock. Callido’s organ, the altars, pulpit and treasury explain why its interior is more significant than the restrained exterior.
