Buzet - Vela Gate

BuzetBuzet is a historic town in northern Croatian Istria, where the Old Town rises above the Mirna valley. The contrast between the stone upper town and the everyday centre in lower Fontana is fundamental to modern Buzet. The town is recognised by its stone silhouette, Venetian heritage and connection with the truffle country along the Mirna. From the south, the story of the fortified town begins at its principal entrance, Vela Gate.

Vela Gate is the principal southern entrance to Buzet - Old TownBuzet's Old Town. The stone portal was erected in 1547 by Rašpor captain Giannmaria Contarini, with a relief of St George above the arch.

The gate links the approach road with the narrow streets inside the walls. Different viewpoints reveal its outer façade, inner passage and position on the hillside edge.

The portal was not merely an entrance but a statement of Venetian authority: its inscription and relief of the fortress patron linked arrival with the rule of the Captain of Rašpor. The modern road still passes through this narrow defensive opening.
