Buzet - Church of St George

In the northern interior of Croatian Istria, Buzet occupies a hill above the fertile Mirna valley. Its identity is shaped by a fortified historic core on the hill and the newer Fontana district below. Views across the valley and the meeting of Venetian civic monuments with local domestic architecture give it a distinctive character. At the north-eastern edge, sacred architecture meets the town wall and steep slope directly.

The Church of St George stands on the north-eastern edge of Buzet's Old Town, above a steep rock face. The present building was completed in 1611 and heightened in the 18th century; its interior contains Baroque altars, paintings and carved pews.

Beside the church survives an older 15th-century Renaissance bell gable. The gallery first shows the church and approach, then the stone remains and belfry at the defensive edge.

The older bell gable above the wall and the church completed in 1611 belong to one sacred and defensive ensemble. Seventeenth-century gilded wooden altars, locally carved choir stalls and large paintings by a follower of Tiepolo give it notable artistic value.
