Split is the largest and most important city in Dalmatia, best known for its magnificent Diocletian's Palace. The historic center of the city with the palace was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
The Mestrovic Gallery is located in the Meje district, on the picturesque Marjan peninsula. In this area there are also the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments, Marina Jadran and Zvoncac Park. There are also beautiful beaches, such as Jezinac beach, Kasljuni beach, Kastelet beach, Zvoncac beach and Hotel Jadran. Mestrovic Gallery is an art museum dedicated to the work of sculptor Ivan Mestrovic from the 20th century. Ivan Mestrovic (1883-1962) was a Croatian sculptor and architect who lived at a time of great events. He worked as a sculptor during the Russian Revolution, the Balkan War and both world wars. All this influenced his works and him as a person. He participated in around 150 exhibitions. He spent his youth in the mountainous part of Dalmatia and then in Split. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1908, he and his wife moved to Paris, where in a short time he produced as many as 50 sculptures and became internationally known. In 1911, critics in Rome named him the best artist after the Renaissance. After the end of the Second World War, he left Yugoslavia and emigrated to the United States of America. The gallery displays some of his most important works, and the building itself is an artistic monument. The permanent collection includes sculptures, paintings, furniture and architecture.
The gallery building was designed by Mestrovic and includes living, working and exhibition spaces. Not far from the gallery is a restored chapel, in which a series of wooden wall panels carved by Ivan Mestrovic are placed.
