Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and an important urban, tourist, and economic center of Dalmatia. It is located on the Adriatic Sea, on a peninsula between Kastela Bay and the Split Channel, and serves as the administrative center of the Split-Dalmatia County.
The city has a rich history dating back to Roman times. Its old town developed around Diocletian's Palace, built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Today, it is protected by UNESCO and represents one of the most important cultural landmarks in Croatia. In addition to its history, Split is also well known for its many beautiful beaches, among which the most notable are Bacvice Beach, Jezinac Beach, Kasjuni Beach, Obojena Beach, Znjan Beach, Prva Voda Beach, Bene Beach, Ovcice Beach, Trstenik Beach, and Firule Beach. One of the most popular beaches is Bacvice, a sandy city beach suitable for families and famous for the traditional local ball game called picigin. It is located on the southern side of Split and is approximately 500 meters long. It offers excellent infrastructure, including bars, cafes, restaurants, showers, changing rooms, beach clubs, watercraft rentals, and a children's playground. Jezinac Beach is a pebble beach approximately half a kilometer long, located along the Ivan Mestrovic promenade, not far from Obojena Beach. It can be reached on foot from the center of Split by following the seaside promenade, which offers pleasant views of the sea and the lively atmosphere of the city.
The beach is believed to have received its name from the sea urchins commonly found along this part of the coast. Sea urchins are typical of very clean waters, so their presence is considered a sign of high-quality and unpolluted sea water. Around the beach grow several pine trees and low Mediterranean vegetation, although natural shade is somewhat limited. There are not many catering facilities in the immediate vicinity, so it is recommended to bring enough water, snacks, and other essentials for a full day at the beach. The surrounding area is considered one of the more well-maintained and prestigious parts of Split. Due to its rocky terrain and slightly more demanding access, the beach is more popular among adults and young people than among families with small children. In some places, the rocks along the shore are sharp and higher, so caution is advised when walking. On the other hand, they are very popular among people who enjoy cliff jumping into the sea. Just a few minutes' walk away, in the direction of Hotel Jadran and the nearby sailing school, there are several bars and cafes where visitors can enjoy a cold drink or a light snack. Nearby is also Obojena Beach, known for its relaxed seaside atmosphere.
The sea at Jezinac is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the underwater world. Because of the sea urchins, the use of water shoes is recommended. Among the beach's interesting features, visitors can also notice several remnants from the past, including an old rusty cannon located by the shore.
