Dramalj is a small coastal tourist settlement in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County in Croatia, located right next to Crikvenica, with which it is also administratively connected. The two places are linked by a well-maintained coastal promenade that stretches for several kilometers along the sea and offers pleasant views of the Kvarner coast.
Today, approximately 1,500 residents live in Dramalj, with the majority of the local population employed in tourism and hospitality. The settlement is first mentioned in written sources in the 18th century under the name Zagorje – Dramalj. Initially, the area was known as a fishing harbor surrounded by olive groves cultivated by the inhabitants of the inland village of Tribalj. More intensive development of the settlement began at the end of the 19th century, when Crikvenica became a popular health resort and tourist destination. Today, Dramalj is a modern tourist resort offering a wide selection of private villas, apartments, holiday villages, and hotels. Particularly popular is the tourist settlement of Kacjak, located on the peninsula of the same name, featuring bungalows, sports and recreational facilities, a restaurant, and views of the island of Krk. The most important cultural and historical landmark is the Church of St. Helen, built on the site of a former Baroque chapel. In the 18th century, the chapel belonged to the Belgrade parish and was also expanded during that period. In 1796, the renowned Rijeka artist Giuseppe Capovilla created a marble altar for the church. The Parish of St. Helen was established in 1809, while the parish house and the church were built after 1812. The church interior was further decorated in the 19th century, with the pulpit added in 1837 and the main altar completed in 1845.
A mild Mediterranean climate, lush vegetation, clean sea, and a large number of sunny days throughout the year create ideal conditions for a relaxing holiday. During the summer, the settlement comes alive with numerous events, including cultural and entertainment programs as well as a summer carnival.
