Fort Bokar, one of the most important fortresses of Dubrovnik, is located on the southwestern corner of the city walls, right next to the Pile Gate. Overlooking the Kolorina Bay and the open sea, it is considered one of the most picturesque locations in the city.
Its construction began in 1461 under the designs of renowned Renaissance architect Michelozzo di Bartolomeo and was completed in the early 16th century, placing it among the architectural achievements of its time. The fortress, designed as a two-story circular structure with a diameter of approximately 15 meters, was one of the first European examples of round fortifications, which provided improved resistance to cannon fire. Massive walls, up to 6 meters thick, protected the interior spaces, which served as storage for weapons, ammunition, and accommodations for soldiers, while the gunports and cannon platforms allowed for effective defense against enemy ships and land-based attacks. Fort Bokar was a key element in the defensive system of the Republic of Dubrovnik, closely linked to Fort Lovrijenac, located on a nearby rock. Together, they formed an impenetrable line of defense that protected the city from Venetians, the Ottoman Empire, and other threats. Despite suffering damage over the centuries, particularly during the 1667 earthquake, Fort Bokar remains one of the best-preserved parts of Dubrovnik’s city walls, symbolizing the city’s resilience and architectural excellence. Built from local limestone, the fortress features spiral staircases connecting its two levels, with the lower level designed for defensive purposes and the upper level serving as a lookout platform. Its strategic location and technical sophistication highlight its crucial role in maintaining the independence of the Republic of Dubrovnik while offering visitors today a glimpse into the city's rich history and masterful defensive systems. Today, Fort Bokar is a popular tourist destination that offers breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea, the island of Lokrum, and Dubrovnik’s old town. In addition to its stunning panoramic views, the fortress serves as a venue for various cultural events, including performances of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Its historical and architectural significance attracts both history enthusiasts and admirers of the engineering achievements of past centuries. Visiting Fort Bokar is an opportunity to delve into the rich historical and cultural heritage of Dubrovnik.
Once a stronghold that defended the city from its enemies, the fortress now provides visitors with a unique experience of walking through history and understanding Dubrovnik's significance as one of the most important historic cities in the Mediterranean.
