Imotski is a Mediterranean town located in the Dalmatian hinterland of southern Croatia, on the northern side of the Biokovo mountains. It lies near the Bosnian-Herzegovinian border. Administratively, it belongs to the Split-Dalmatia Municipality.
Among the cultural and historical sights, the most important are the church of St. Francis of Assisi, the Franciscan monastery, the Benzon house, the Colombani house, the Mazzi house, the statue of Fra Stipan Vrljić, the Gospin Dolac stadium and the Topana fortress with the church of Our Lady of the Angels. Gospin Dolac Stadium is considered one of the most attractive and original stadiums in the world. In 2017, the BBC named it one of the ten most beautiful in the world. It was built in 1989 on steep cliffs. It can accommodate 4,000 spectators, but the number of tourists who visit it is much higher. Picturesque views of the surroundings are offered from the colorful tribune. In the immediate vicinity of the football field is the Topana fortress, which is considered one of the most important fortresses in the interior of Dalmatia.
The fortress is first mentioned in written sources in the 10th century, during the time of the Croatian rulers. It is characterized by an extremely attractive natural location that overlooks the city and dominates the entire area, and was predetermined due to its strategic importance. It has been used for defensive purposes since Illyrian and Roman times. It was completely abandoned in 1816. In it stands a small votive church, built in 1788 and dedicated to the Angelska Mother of God. The stadium was named after her. The biggest natural attractions in Imotski are the Blue and Red Lakes. Blue Lake is a popular spot for walkers, as a wide footpath leads to its depths. It offers pleasant refreshment in summer. Rdeče jezero is the deepest lake in Croatia and one of the deepest karst lakes in the world. It got its name from the reflection of the red rocks that surround it.
It was formed by the collapse of the ceiling of a large underground cavity. The lake is a large reservoir of drinking water and a habitat for many plant and animal species, some of which are endemic. Because Red Lake is fed by underground sources instead of rainfall, it is never dry.
