Vransko Lake - Jugovir

Not far from Biograd na Moru, Vransko Lake extends between the Adriatic coast and the karst hinterland. The influence of the nearby sea is particularly evident at the southern edge of the nature park, where water, karst and an old fishing tradition meet at Jugovir.

Jugovir lies on the southern edge of Vransko Lake and marks a remarkable hydrological connection between the lake and the sea through the karst underground. During strong southerly winds and high sea levels, salt water can spring towards the lake, a phenomenon reflected in the place name.

The restored 18th-century Borelli fisherman’s house stands beside the stone water channels. Fishermen and guards used it as an overnight shelter and store while controlling the eel catch at one of the main migration points between the lake and the sea.
