Vransko Lake - Babin Škoj

The southern part of Vransko Lake near Pakostane combines wetlands, a rocky karst landscape and traces of very early settlement. The lake is not far from Biograd na Moru, while Babin Škoj is one of the most interesting places for discovering its natural and archaeological heritage.

Babin Škoj is a low peninsula on the southern part of Vransko Lake. Before the Prosika canal was dug in the 18th century and the lake level fell, it was a small island; during high water it can still become separated from the mainland.

Its naturally protected position was occupied and fortified for thousands of years. The Liburnians built a strong defensive system here, while burial mounds or tumuli survive on the higher ground. Dry-stone walls, building remains and interpretation panels line the route, with views across the lake and nearby olive groves.
