Zagreb, as we know it today, is part of its historical core and developed in the Middle Ages on two hills, which are the secular Gradec, the present Upper Town and the ecclesiastical Kaptol. The first written source dates back to 1094, when the Zagreb diocese was founded on Kaptol.
Mark's Square is the center of Upper Town and the main square of former Gradec. On the square there are the parish church of St. Mark, the Ban Court and the Croatian Parliament. In the center of the square is the parish church of St. Mark, which was built in the middle of the 13th century. It was renovated in the neo-Gothic style at the end of the 19th century. At that time, the roof with the coats of arms of the Kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia and the city of Zagreb were created. Ban Court is located at Mark's Square 1 and is the seat of the Croatian government and the office of the Prime Minister. The palace was built at the beginning of the 19th century and was the home of Croatian bans from 1808 to 1918. The legendary ban Josip Jelacic lived and died here. According to the constitution, the Sabor is the representative body of the nation and has legislative authority in the Republic of Croatia. The Sabor has been in this location since its first session, which took place in 1737.
The current appearance of the Sabor building dates from the beginning of the 20th century. Decisions were made here about the secession of Croatia from Austria-Hungary in 1918 and the secession from Yugoslavia in 1991.
