Zagreb, the largest city in Croatia, was built in the Middle Ages on two hills, which are the ecclesiastical Kaptol and the secular Gradec, the current Upper Town. Ban Court is located on St. Mark Square, which was once called Radic Square and is the central square in Upper Town.
Ban Court is an important historical building on the western side of St. Mark's Square and has the address St Mark Square 1. From 1809 to 1918, it was the residence of the Croatian bans. It is a long baroque one-story building, which, together with the adjoining palace, forms the current seat of the Government of the Republic of Croatia. Ban Court today represents a complex of two four-winged city palaces, which were built in the second half of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century as a superstructure of older medieval palaces. They are surrounded by a square consisting of St. Mark Square and the streets - Freudenreich, Matoseva and Brezovacka, which are an example of baroque classicism.
Ban Court is on the list of protected cultural monuments of the Republic of Croatia. The facade of the building was renovated in 2008. The Church of Saint Mark is also located on St. Mark's Square, which is one of the oldest buildings in Zagreb and one of its important symbols.
