Zagreb is divided into Upper Town, Lower Town and wider center. In the Lower Town are located Ilica, the most famous street in Zagreb, Peter Preradovic Square, Masarykova Street, Marshal Tito Square, King Tomislav Square and Nikola Subic Zrinski Square.
Today's Marshal Tito Square was formerly called University Square and Theater Square. The place houses the Croatian National Theater, a fountain named the Fountain of Life, which is the work of sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, and in the northern part is the University of Zagreb. As a unique cultural center, Marshal Tito Square is the last in a series of eight green squares that formed the architectural design of the city during the 19th century. The Croatian National Theatre was built in the historicist style, with rich baroque forms from the 17th century. Famous Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer, who designed many European theater buildings, also created Zagreb's House of Opera, Ballet and Drama. The theater was officially opened in 1895. Since then, the institution has enriched the cultural life of Zagreb with a rich choice from national, contemporary to world classics. The Fountain of Life was created at the beginning of the 20th century and is located in front of the National Theatre. It is one of the most beautiful examples of fountains, as it is distinguished by its creativity, simplicity and impressionistic appearance. The square, named after Josip Broz Tito (1892-1980), president of the former Yugoslavia, houses the headquarters of the university, which was built in the 19th century.
It was originally a hospital and for some time a tobacco factory. In front of the entrance is a sculpture History of Croats, representing the Croatian national symbol, erected in this place in 1971. The statue is the work of sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, who was inspired by his mother's portrait.
