Zagreb is a picturesque city with many squares, the most popular and the most spacious of which is Ban Josip Jelacic Square. In the beginning, it was called Madusevac, after the spring where the well is now, and later Harmica. Ban Jelacic Square is the heart of Zagreb and the main meeting place of the townspeople.
The most famous squares are King Tomislav Square, Strossmayer Square, Mark Square with the parish church of Saint Mark, Nikola Subic Zrinski Square, Petr Preradovic Square - Cvjetni trg Square, Mazuranic Square and Marshal Tito Square, which in the middle of the 19th century was just a marshy area in the suburbs of Zagreb. Nikola Subic Zrinski Square was built in 1826 as a public space intended for an animal fair. During the commemorative ceremony on the 300th anniversary of the defense against the Turks in Siget and the death of the Croatian ban Nikola Subic Zrinski (1508-1566), it was transformed into a public park in the neo-Renaissance style. That's when it got the name Zrinski Square. On the wall of building number 20, there is a picture of the brave defenders in Siget, which is the work of the Croatian painter Oton Ivekovic (1869-1939). The people of Zagreb experience Zrinski Square, together with the other two, which are located in a row next to the main railway station, as a whole and call it Zrinjevac. The square is a popular promenade, which is given a special charm and atmosphere by water fountains and a lovely music pavilion, which was erected in 1895. On the north side of the square, there has been a meteorological column since 1884, which was presented to the city by the military doctor dr. Adolf Holzer. It is made of marble from Istria, according to the plans of Hermann Bolle.
In the green area of Zrinjevac, in front of the Palace of the Academy, busts of famous and important Croats are placed in a semicircle, namely Ivan Mazuranic, Juraj Julija Klovic, Andrije Medulic, Ivan Kukuljevic Sakcinski, Nikola Jurisic and Krste Frankopan. Zrinski Square is the most popular square in Zagreb.
