Kaptol Street is best know by Zagreb Cathedral, which is one of the symbols of the city of Zagreb, the Renaissance walls surrounding the cathedral, Saint Stephen's Chapel, the treausury and the well in front of the cathedral.
Zagreb Catedral is a remarkable example of the different architectural styles of construction that have changed over the centuries. Almost all styles are represented on this complex. The Diocese of Zagreb was founded in 1094 and construction of the cathedral began shortly afther that. In 1880, the sacral building and most of the city of Zagreb were destroyed in a major earthquake. At that time, the cathedral was restored in neo-Gothic style in line with European trends. It got a present appearance, with two elegant towers about 105 feet high. The defensive walls with towers around the cathedral were built during the defense against Turkish invasions. It was built in a record time from 1512 to 1521. Today is one of the most preserved Renaissance walls in Europe. Chapel of Saint Stephen was built right next to the cathedral in the first half of the 13th century. It was used for ceremonies at the time when major construction work was being done at the cathedral. The preserved 14th century Gothic organs are a unique example in Croatian art. The treasury of the Zagreb Cathedral recounts of the 14th century Christianity in the area. Near the cathedral is the Pond Park, formerly bishop's pond, where priests from Kaptol fished on a special Friday day.
In the 19th century, the ponds were converted into an English style park and only the name Pond is reminiscent of the past. Today, the park houses statues, benches, exotic plans, a children's park and a chapel. In is an ideal place to relax, play and walk in the heart of the town center.
