Stone Gate is the eastern gate to medieval city and Zagreb's most significant holy place. It is located in Upper Town, which is the oldest part of Zagreb. It is the only remaining entry of Zagreb's old fortifications.
Stone gate is the only gate conserved today. It was built in 13th century as one of four main gates leading to the town. Together with Saint Mark's Church, it stands as a living testimony to past times. Within the gate, you will find stone slabs and a shrine praising the Mother of God. The shrine of lady of the Stone Gate has the painting of the Mother of God. Which amazingly survived the 17th century fire and is kept safe by an artistically forged iron fence. The square stone slabs are engraved all over, within the gate passage. These stone slabs present locals praise and thanks to the Lady Virgin. The Gate is daily visited by people who come to light a candle and thank the Lady for protecting them. The Stone Gate is one of the entrances to old Upper Town. While walking through feel free to stop by, light a candle, pray and make a wish. Nearby you can see a statue of Dora Krupiceva, a charming heroine from a novel The Goldsmith's Gold written by August Senoa. The oldest pharmacy in Zagreb is located in the same street, operating continuously since the year 1355.
Stone Gate is accessible on foot from Zagreb ban Jelacic square. Just go north through Radiceva street. You can take the funicular first, and then on your way back from Upper Town pass through the Stone Gate.
