The Zagreb funicular is a funicular railway that connects Zagreb's Upper Town and Lower Town. Upper Town is the part of the city where most of the oldest sights are located, while Lower Town is the area of many museums, theaters, galleries and the center of business life.
The lower station of the funicular is located in Tomic Street, while the upper station is located on Strossmayer Promenade, at the foot of the Lotrscak Tower. With a track length of only 66 meters, it is known as the shortest funicular in the world intended for public transport. The funicular was officially opened on October 8, 1890, and began operating on April 23, 1893. At first, it operated with steam power, which was replaced by electric power in 1934. The Zagreb cable car has preserved its original appearance and construction to this day. The funicular is one of the important tourist attractions of the city of Zagreb. Its manager is the Zagreb electric tram. The funicular has two carriages, the capacity of which is 28 passengers, 16 seats and 12 standing places. The maximum permitted speed is 1.5 m/s. The ride takes only 64 seconds. The builder D. W. Klein from Osijek got the idea to build the Zagreb funicular after observing the movement of pedestrians and on the basis of funiculars in European cities such as Budapest, Zurich and others. In 1888, he succeeded in obtaining a building permit from the City Council for the construction of a funicular. After many general repairs, the funicular was closed in 1969.
Immediately after that, the construction of a new one was started, which was completed in 1973 and is a successful reconstruction of the original funicular. The new funicular began to operate on July 26, 1974. It is regularly maintained every year, and in 2005 the upper and lower stations were renovated.
