Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, which represents the cultural, economic, scientific, administrative and political center of the Republic of Croatia. The city is the seat of the president, the parliament and the government.
A quarter of the entire population of Croatia lives in Zagreb. Zagreb, as we know it now, is part of its historical core and was created in the Middle Ages on two hills, which are the ecclesiastical Kaptol and the secular Gradec, today's Upper Castle. The first written source dates back to 1094, when King Ladislav founded the Zagreb diocese on Kaptol. The hill towns developed rapidly. In the 17th and 18th centuries, luxurious baroque palaces and churches were built. The Jesuits built the church of St. Katarina, which is the most beautiful baroque church in Zagreb. Both cities merged into one city of Zagreb in 1850. Upper Town is the area of Zagreb where most of the oldest and most important city sights are located. Here are Zagreb Cathedral, Tkalcic Street, which is dotted with many bars, Lotrscak Tower, St. Mark's Church, Banski Dvori, Croatian Parliament, Stone Gate, Dolac market, funicular, St. Mary's Church, Strossmayer Promenade. Zagreb's neo-Gothic cathedral still dominates the city skyline, and the Renaissance walls are one of the few preserved in this part of Europe. A cannon has been warning at 12 o'clock for a hundred years from the Lotrscak tower. The stone gate is the only preserved gate in medieval Gradec.
With a track length of only 66 meters, the funicular is known as the shortest funicular in the world intended for public transport. Dolac is the largest, most famous and most important market in Zagreb. Church of St. Mary was originally a monastery, but at the beginning of the 16th century it became a parish church.
