Strossmayer promenade is the popular place for panoramic views of Zagreb. It is one of the most beautiful and romantic promenades in town, also known as Zagreb Stross. Throughout most of the year promenade hosts many events, concerts and performances.
The promenade got its name by Josip Juraj Strossmayer (1815-1905), a Croatian politician, benefactor and Roman Catholic bishop. He was born in Osijek to a Croatian family. Strossmayer is credited with organizational and monetary support for a wide variety of public works in Croatia: public libraries, schools, gymnasiums, helping the poor, building roads and donating building material for Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. At promenade you will enjoy breathtaking views of Zagreb and rediscover fondness and calmness. It goes along the remains of town's medieval defensive walls. It is starting right underneath Lotrscak Tower, which is one of the last Zagreb's fortifications. Inside the Gric cannon fires every day at noon. Walking along you will see a statue of Anton Gustav Matos, a Croatian poet who sits on a bench overlooking Zagreb. He was also a essayist, journalist, short story writer and travelogue writer.
