Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is the cultural, scientific, economic, administrative and political center of the Republic of Croatia with the seat of the government, president and parliament. It is the only metropolitan city in Croatia. About one million people live in it.
The city is divided into the Upper Town, the Lower Town and the wider center. Upper Town is known for Ban Josip Jelacic Square, Kaptol, Dolac, the Bloody Bridge, Stone Gate, Katarina Square, Mark Square, Strossmayer Promenade. Lower Town is famous for King Tomislav Square, Ilica, Marshal Tito Square, Nikola Subic Zrinski Square and others. The statue of Saint George is located in the area of Radiceva Street. It is the work of the Austrian sculptors Winder and Kompatscher, which the city received as a gift from the Mazuranic family. The sculpture has been in this location since 1994. It is one of the few examples that shows Saint George at the moment when he has already killed the dragon and is showing honor to the enemy. Near the statue are also the famous Stone Gate, which are the only preserved gate in medieval Gradec. They were completely burned down in the first half of the 18th century, but the icon of Saint Mary was miraculously saved in this fire, which is still on the altar in the chapel. The Mother of God of the Stone Gate is the protector of the city of Zagreb, and her glory is shown on May 31 with a solemn procession.
Zagreb City Day is also celebrated on the same day. Stone Street is home to the oldest pharmacy in Zagreb, which was opened in 1355. The pharmacy has not stopped working since its establishment and is still operating today.
