The city of Zagreb is divided into Upper Town, Lower Town and the wider center. The most famous areas in the Upper Town are Josip Jelacic Square, Kaptol, Dolac, Stone Gate, Opaticka Street, Katarina Square, Tkalciceva Street and Strossmayer's Promenade.
Illyrian Square is the most northern point of the Upper Town. It was built at the intersection of three streets. The square was named after the Illyrian movement, a national political movement in the first half of the 19th century. A chapel with a statue in the center of the square and piano sounds from the School of Classical Ballet create an unusual romance of timelessness. Near the Illyrian Square are the Zagreb City Museum and the Pop Tower. The museum has its rooms in the restored former monastery of Saint Clare. The nuns came to Zagreb by invitation of the city lords, because of their daughters. The Clarices established the first girl's school to teach music and singing in addition to basic subjects. The main facade of the monastery had no real windows, which was certainly a trend in construction or a method of isolating nuns from everyday life. In a modern and also fun way, the museum displays events from Zagreb's past, from prehistoric times to the present. t has been located in this house since 1947.
The Pop Tower was built in the 13th century as the part of defensive walls around Upper Town during the time of the Turkish invasions. In the 17th century, towers and walls lost their primary role. Since 1903, an observatory has been located at the top of the Pop Tower.
