Petr Preradovic Square is located in the Lower Town area. It is named after the general and poet of love and patriotic songs, Petar Preradovic (1818-1872). Among the people of Zagreb, it is known as Cvjetni trg Square, due to the long tradition of selling flowers there.
The poet's monument stands in the middle of the square. Since the 14th century, fairs have been held on the square, and the popular name of the square arose because of the many flower stalls. On the north side of the square is the Orthodox church, which was built at the end of the 19th century on the site of the former Roman Catholic church of Saint Margaret. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was planned to sell fruit and vegetables on the market, but soon the proposal was rejected and the market got its present representative appearance. Near Cvjetni trg Square is a monument in honor of one of the greatest Croatian poets, Augustin Tin Ujevic (1891-1955), which was erected on the hundredth anniversary of the poet's birth. Not far from the square is the Oktogon, a popular city gateway, named after the central octagonal space with a glass roof.
The shopping gallery and passage connect the lively Ilica street with the relaxed atmosphere of Cvjetni trg Square. The representative commercial and residential building of the former First Croatian Savings Bank was built at the end of the 19th century in a record time of fifteen months.
