Zagreb is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Croatia. It is located in the northwest of the country, along the Sava River and on the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. It is the only metropolitan city in Croatia. It has around one million inhabitants.
Zagreb is a city with a rich history dating back to the Stone Age. Zagreb, as we know it today, is part of its historical core and was created in the Middle Ages on two hills, which are the ecclesiastical Kaptol and the secular Gradec, the present Upper Town. The first written source dates back to 1094, when the Zagreb diocese was founded. A market was formed in the area below two settlements, where trading took place. The current Ban Jelacic Square is the heart of the city of Zagreb and the main meeting place of the residents. The legend of the origin of the city's name is attributed to the fountain in the square. The differences between the two cities were finally eliminated in 1850, when they both merged into the city of Zagreb. The Lower Town stretches from the old part of the city to the main railway station. The development of industrial production, banking and transport and trade greatly influenced the appearance of the city in the second half of the 19th century. All the streets in the Lower Town had to be straight and the same width, and the buildings of the same type had to be of the same height. Wide squares and monumental buildings in the style of classicism and historicism next to many parks create the current picture of Zagreb. From Ban Jelacic Square, Praska Street leads to a series of park-squares, Zagreb's version of the Vienna Ring, the so-called Green Horseshoe. The chestnut trees and the yellow facade remind of Croatia's membership in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
In the area of the Lower Town, there is the main railway station, the University Library, faculties, the National Theatre, representative palaces, the Academy of Sciences and Arts, King Tomislav Square, Nikola Zrinskog Square, Strossmayer Square, Oktogon, the picturesque Botanical Garden and more.
