Zagreb has a rich cultural life. Around thirty theatres are active in the town, with occasional and regular programmes. Along with museums, a large number of galleries and many music, dance and theatre festivals all combine to make Zagreb a town of art.
Zagreb museums store and display invaluable historical treasures. In addition to interesting artifacts to the history of the city, museums also feature art collections of artistic and historical value from around the world. Remains of the Neanderthal Krapina prehistoric man and the Zagreb mummy with the longest Etruscan script in the world are extremely rare. The Mimara Museum is located in the area of Lower Town, which extends from the old medieval town of Zagreb to the main railway station. Since the Universiade in the 1989, the museum has exhibited a unique collection of works of art from different periods and fields. The Mimara Museum was established in 1980 and was only opened to public on July 17 in 1987. It is situated on Roosevelt Square. The property of the museum was once the private collection of art collector Ante Topic Mimar (1898-1987), which he donated it to the Croatian people, under condition that the space for its permanent exhibition will be arranged. The property was expanded with new acquisitions. The Mimara Museum has its place in the architectural complex of the Gymnasiums of Lower Town, which were built in the late 19th century in the spirit of historicism.
It is a valuable example of the neo-Renaissance palace, the work of two Greek architects who specialized in the design of school buildings. Other interesting museums in Zagreb are Museum of Broken Relationships, City Museum, Archaeological Museum and others.
