Novigrad is a small Mediterranean town located in the northwest of Istria, between Umag and Poreč. It is an attractive tourist destination and port, which was once a quiet fishing village, but over the years has become a popular resort for tourists from all over Europe and the world.
The settlement is said to have been founded in late antiquity by refugees from Pannonian Emona. Novigrad is marked by many cultural and historical sights. The old town was once completely surrounded by mighty walls, which have only been partially preserved to this day. In the old center, the rich heritage of the city is complemented by an interesting and diverse layout of the Gallerion, which is a naval collection of the former Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Navy. The naval collection reveals the secrets and plans of the navy about its activities in the wider Adriatic area at the time. The collection with many maps, photographs and plans shows ships, entire fleets and the appearance of coastal towns. Also on display are the uniforms of officers, captains and sailors who came to Istrian ports from all over the world, as well as weapons and instruments without which navigation would not be safe in those days. Today, the Gallerion is a remarkable monument to seafaring and sailors.
It shows the varied life along Croatia and all the Adriatic coast under the Austro-Hungarian navy, which in the Habsburg monarchy with its mighty fleet ruled the entire Adriatic area until the end of the First World War.
