Novigrad is a picturesque town, tourist center and port, which administratively falls under the Istria Country. Once a peaceful fishing village, it has developed over the years into a popular resort for tourists from all over Europe and the world.
It is located on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula, on the coast between Porec and Umag. Novigrad is marked by a varied historical past, which is reflected in the rich cultural heritage and many attractions. Among the largest are the walls with towers and the former main city gate, bell tower, the parish Church of St. Pelagius and St. Maximilian, the Lapidarium Museum, the Rigo Gallery on the ground floor of the old Rigo Family Palace, the Austro-Hungarian Navy Museum Gallerion and more. The bell tower is the most recognizable local heritage site. The free-standing bell tower of the parish church was built in 1883, modeled on the bell tower of St. Mark in Venice, Italy. The St. Pelagius and St. Maximilian Church was thoroughly restored in 1408, 1580, 1746 and 1775. The current neoclassical façade dates from 1935. The largest church landmark is the early Romanesque crypt, which is one of the few in Croatia. Lapidarium is one of the most important collections of its kind in Croatia. The collection mainly includes elements of church architecture from the parish church. In the old center, the rich heritage of the city is complemented by an interesting and diverse layout of the Gallerion, which is a naval collection of the former Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Navy. The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was built at the end of the 15th century. It was rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century and in the first half of the 19th century.
It is an example of a single-nave hall with a classicist analysis of the façade. Next to the church there was once a small monastery in which the orders of Dominicans, Augustinians and the third order of Franciscans alternated.
