Novigrad is a picturesque town and port located on the western coast of the Istrian Peninsula. It is the seat of the eponymous municipality and administratively belongs to the Istria County. The town lies between Umag and Poreč. Once a fishing and trading center, it is now a popular tourist destination.
The town developed on a small peninsula, which in the past was an island, but today is connected to the mainland by a causeway. The town center was historically fully protected by defensive walls, of which only individual preserved sections remain today. After the town and the surrounding area came under Venetian rule in the 13th century, the walls were supposedly built on the foundations of late-antique fortifications. Construction was carried out gradually and is attributed to local craftsmen, who first built lower defensive walls and then, following local tradition, a higher wall with battlements made of carefully worked stone quarried nearby. The defensive system was renovated several times over the centuries. Near the former city gates, an older rectangular tower has been preserved, while the round towers date from the Renaissance period. The last major restoration of parts of the walls at the Prolaz Venecija passage and on the seaside of Brolo Park was carried out in 2004 and 2005. The luxurious Cittar Hotel stands out for its unique location within the medieval city walls. During the construction of the new part of the hotel, a valuable archaeological site was discovered with important finds dating back to the second half of the 7th century. The discoveries include bronze earrings, bronze belt buckles, bone combs, fragments of ceramic vessels, and a knife blade. The hotel offers top-quality accommodation and relaxation in its newly built wellness and beauty center. It is well known for its sumptuous breakfast, which offers guests a rich selection of fresh and locally sourced ingredients.
The hotel is an ideal starting point for exploring the town's attractions and enjoying seaside activities at the nearby beach. Tennis enthusiasts can enjoy the courts year-round, located just one kilometer from the hotel, close to the pine forest and the sea.
