Novigrad is a small town and port located on the western coast of Istria. It lies between the towns of Umag and Porec and is part of Istria County. Thanks to its favorable seaside location, rich history, and well-preserved old town center, Novigrad is one of the more recognizable coastal towns of Istria.
Novigrad has a long and diverse history dating back to antiquity. In the past, it was an important fishing and trading center, which is still reflected today in its urban layout, architecture, and cultural heritage. Over the centuries, the town has preserved the character of a small Mediterranean settlement while also developing into a modern tourist destination. Among the most important sights of Novigrad are the town walls with defensive towers, the Church of St. Pelagius and St. Maximus, the freestanding bell tower, the Belvedere, the town harbor which represents the center of social life, the Gallerion (Naval War Collection), and the Lapidarium Museum. The Belvedere is the only Istrian loggia located directly by the seashore. It is believed to have been built on the foundations of an older defensive structure, most likely on the remains of a former tower of the town walls. Its construction dates back to the 16th century, and over time it has been renovated several times, in 1860 and again in 1930. In its original design, it was covered with a four-sided roof. On the western side of the loggia, an arched passage called Porta a marina opens toward the sea. The keystone of the arch bears the year 1649, although its present location is not original. At the end of the 19th century, during the construction of a new town park, the passage was relocated from its original position in the northwestern part of the town. The Belvedere is an ideal starting point for a seaside walk and for watching the sunset.
In addition to its cultural and historical landmarks, Novigrad is known for its beautiful beaches and clean sea, well-maintained parks, diverse culinary offer, sports events, summer festivals, fishermen’s celebrations, and music events. It also has an important transport location, as it is well connected to other towns in western Istria.
