Novigrad is a port town located on the western coast of the Istrian Peninsula. It is the seat of the eponymous municipality and administratively belongs to the Istria County. The town lies between Umag and Porec. Once a quiet fishing village, it is now a popular tourist destination.
The town has a long and varied history that dates back to ancient times. It developed on a small peninsula, which in the past was an island, but is now connected to the mainland by a causeway. Due to its favorable seaside location, rich history, and well-preserved old town center, Novigrad is one of the most recognizable coastal towns in Istria. The main local attractions include the Church of St. Pelagius and St. Maximus, Belvedere, the town walls with defensive towers, the town harbor – Mandrač, which serves as a social hub, the Lapidarium Museum, the Neo-Gothic building, the bell tower, and the Gallerion (Maritime Military Collection). Belvedere is the only town loggia in Istria and stands right by the sea. It was built in the 16th century as part of the town walls. The Neo-Gothic house was constructed in the 1920s following the Venetian Gothic style, reflected in its architectural elements, façade design, and decorative details. This style is characterized by pronounced verticality, richly designed openings, and ornamental accents inspired by Venetian architectural tradition. The façade of the building features an older stone relief of the Venetian coat of arms with the winged lion of Saint Mark holding an open book, symbolizing peace, justice, and the historical connection of the area with the Venetian Republic. The natural attractions of Novigrad include walking trails, green parks, pebble and rocky beaches, and a rich marine environment suitable for recreation and water sports. The most beautiful parks are the Novigrad Diocese Park, Giovanni Rainis Park, and Irma Bencic Park. The best beaches in Novigrad are Maestral Beach, Town Beach, Laguna Beach, Karpinjan Beach, Rivarela Beach, Pineta Beach, and Mareda Beach.
Novigrad is known for its diverse culinary offer, especially fish dishes and seafood, which complement the town’s tourist attractions. Cultural and sports events hold a special place and take place throughout the year. Among the most notable are summer festivals, fishing celebrations, and music events.
