Trsteno is a small coastal village whose distinctive green appearance has been shaped over centuries by gardens, Mediterranean vegetation and exceptionally old trees. The most famous pair stands beside the road in the upper village, before the route descends towards the arboretum and the sea.
Two remarkable Oriental plane trees (Platanus orientalis) grow beside the main road through Trsteno. Their massive trunks, broad crowns and great age make them two of Croatia's best-known trees and place them among the largest old plane trees in Europe.
Both trees have been protected as monuments of park architecture since 1951. Their roots and spreading crowns define the centre of the village, and the
memorial to King Tomislav stands beside the larger tree.
