Labin - Town Loggia

Labin in eastern Istria combines a historic hilltop centre with districts that developed outside its former walls. Town life unfolded both in the narrow streets and along the routes beyond the walls.

Marshal Tito Square is a transition between the wider town and the old centre. Its edges also served for public gatherings and civic business.

Beside the square stands the low town loggia, open between its columns. Its roof and stone balustrade form a public space between the road, square and nearby houses.

The loggia was built around the mid-16th century and restored in 1662. News and judgments were once announced there, while the sheltered space also served as a gathering place. A pillory stood in front of it. These uses show that the loggia was not simply an architectural ornament but part of everyday town government and social life.

Stone monuments and coats of arms were later displayed in the loggia, which also serves as a small lapidarium. Objects stand beneath its roof, and the open arches allow views through the building towards the square. Its significance is best understood in relation to the public space around it.

Its modest scale contrasts with the tall façades of later administrative buildings beside the square. Yet its openness made it accessible to a broad range of townspeople. Looking out from beneath its roof says more about its former role than viewing any one object inside: the loggia was a covered part of the square, not an enclosed hall.
