Labin is the largest town in southeastern Istria. From the sea, Rabac Bay, is about five kilometers away. The old city center spreads out on the Labin hill, while the newer part expands at the foot of the Podlabina.
The place is the best-preserved acropolis settlement in Istria and a popular excursion point. Labin was once known for its coal mine. Today, trade, metal industry and wood processing have developed here. The settlement is located next to the road that leads north towards Reka and south towards Pula. In the Roman period it is referred to as Albona, but it was already known by the Croatian form of the name Labin in the early Middle Ages. The place is surrounded by defensive walls, in which the main city gate was built in 1587. In front of the city gate is a square with a city loggia, in which there is a lapidary. The lodge was built in 1662 and was renovated in 1777. The Renaissance Praetorian Palace dates from the 15th century, and the Battiala - Lazzarini Palace from the 18th century houses a museum today. The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is characterized by many periods, which are Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicism and the present day. Church of St. Maria is special for the construction of the lobby and has a valuable art collection. In the church of St. Anton are the most beautiful examples of marble altars. The famous humanist Matija Vlacic is from Labin. The house where he was born was restored. In Dubrova, a village at the foot of Labina, the most representative rural villa with outbuildings, surrounded by a high wall, was built in the middle of the 17th century.
Since 1970, Dubrova has been the seat of the Mediterranean Sculpture Symposium. The meeting of domestic and foreign masters takes place every year in the months of August and September.
