Labin - Giuseppina Martinuzzi Street

Labin is an eastern Istrian town with an old hilltop centre and newer districts below. The former walls influenced the course of the narrow, winding streets in its older quarter.

Giuseppina Martinuzzi Street follows one of them. Its paved stretches, steps and shifting views between the houses create a different rhythm from the open Marshal Tito Square. Some parts of the street also open towards the lower town.

Several historic buildings stand along the street, but their relationship matters more than a bare list. Franković-Vlačić Palace is associated with Matthias Flacius Illyricus and his memorial collection. Nearby are Manzini Palace, with its prominent stone portal, and Negri Palace. The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, now associated with the Alvona Gallery, also appears among the houses.

The palaces were built or took on their later appearance when the defensive walls no longer defined the town edge solely for military purposes. Along this short route, traces of the walls, noble living and newer cultural activity interweave. The street is named for Giuseppina Martinuzzi, a woman from Labin known for her work in education, journalism and social causes.

Views over rooftops alternate with shaded passages and steps. Individual façades are often visible only at an angle or from close by, so the street's character emerges gradually. Viewing its palaces and smaller church also reveals how old residential buildings have adapted to cultural uses today.
