Labin - Uskok Gate

Labin lies in eastern Istria, its oldest centre standing on a hill. Walls once protected the settlement, whose narrow streets and steps adapted to the slope.

The Uskok Gate is a smaller opening in the wall, away from the main St. Florus Gate. Narrow streets and steps lead to it, and its arch is set between buildings and walls. A historical account of the town fortifications mentions the gate as part of an older route along the defensive edge.

Unlike the imposing entrance from the square, this passage fits the tight space and hillside. The stone paving, steps and low arch show that the town wall did not rely solely on one monumental entrance; everyday routes also passed through smaller openings between houses.
