Labin - St. Florus Town Gate

Labin stands on a hill in eastern Istria, a few kilometres from the sea. Walls once protected its old centre, separating the close-packed streets from routes outside.

At Marshal Tito Square, the open space before the town meets the route into the denser network of inner streets.

From here, St. Florus Gate passes through the wall. Outside, its prominent stone portal is set into an orange façade; beyond it, the passage narrows and opens towards the streets within the town.

The gate, also called Porta Sanfior, was built in the late 16th century as the main town entrance. Above the portal are Labin's coat of arms and the Venetian lion, a reminder of Venetian rule. The long arched passage with several openings shows that the gate is not just a decorative façade but a real spatial boundary between the outer square and the walled town.

The view changes several times on the way through: first the broad façade, then the shade of the arch, and finally a brighter street. Nearby stands the Podestà's Town Palace, the former seat of civic authority. Together they help explain how entry into the town and its governance were once connected.

The monumental outer entrance is followed by a longer, multi-part passage beneath the building. The portal's stone frame and the relief above it addressed those arriving from the square, while the inner arches guided their route into the tight street network. The contrast between the bright square and the shelter of the passage is still the most immediate way to experience the boundary of the former town. The connection with nearby Torjon shows that access and defence formed part of the same urban edge.
