Labin - Old Public Toilet

LabinLabin lies in eastern Istria and retains an old centre above the newer town. Its history is visible not only in palaces and churches, but also in traces of everyday life.

At the edge of the old centre, narrow footpaths branch off from Labin - Marshal Tito SquareMarshal Tito Square. Away from the main façades, they left room for less conspicuous urban needs.

A small former public toilet stands along one of these paths. A narrow passage beside a stone wall leads to it, making it easy to miss among the town's larger sights.

The surviving space is a trace of everyday infrastructure often absent from conventional portrayals of historic towns. An old stone urinal remains beside the entrance with its stone railing. A local historical account places the construction of Labin's first public toilet during Italian rule in the first half of the 20th century.

Its surviving fittings and location beside a footpath tell us more than an unverified construction year would. The small building is a reminder that the needs of everyday town life left marks beyond palaces, churches and squares.
