Crikvenica - Aquarium

Crikvenica is a distinctly maritime town whose history is closely tied to fishing and life on the Adriatic. Its compact centre developed between the harbour and the river mouth, while the coast continues through a sequence of promenades, parks and bathing areas. Short distances make it possible to combine most central sights in a walk.

The aquarium stands in the town centre at 8 Vinodolska Street. It is only a short walk from Stjepan Radic Square, and its entrance with a distinctive illuminated sign opens directly onto the town street.

Thirty tanks designed to evoke natural habitats occupy slightly more than 200 square metres. The display first introduces the underwater world of the local sea and then places it alongside the vivid inhabitants of tropical seas and fresh water. A visit is therefore more than a sequence of separate tanks: it also offers a comparison of very different aquatic environments and the ways animals have adapted to them.

The tanks contain more than one hundred Adriatic fish species and around fifty tropical marine fish. Notable inhabitants include moray eels, sharks and catsharks, seahorses, lobsters, octopuses, scorpionfish and groupers; the tropical section includes clownfish, angelfish and pufferfish, while freshwater tanks contain piranhas, neon tetras and discus fish. The collection grew from years of cooperation between biologists, ichthyologists, aquarists and local fishermen, linking it with the practical knowledge of people familiar with the waters off Crikvenica.

As an indoor attraction, the aquarium is a useful addition to a waterfront walk even in poor weather, while also providing an accessible introduction to the life beneath the sea surrounding the town. After the visit, the town harbour is only a few minutes away on foot, where the route can continue among boats and the everyday activity of the waterfront.
