Crikvenica has a long bathing and sporting tradition that developed directly beside the sea. In its compact centre, the promenade, harbour and waterside sports facilities all lie within a few minutes’ walk.
The Municipal Swimming Area, known in Croatian as Gradsko plivalište, stands beside
Strossmayer Promenade where the central waterfront gives way to the Balustrada bathing zone. It is only a short walk from the
town harbour, placing this sporting space directly within the everyday life of Crikvenica’s seafront.
This is not a conventional enclosed pool but a swimming field filled naturally by the sea. Shore walls and offshore structures define the rectangular water area, while steps descend from stone and concrete platforms. The arrangement gives swimmers a clearer and calmer space than the open shore, although conditions still depend on sea temperature, waves and weather.
The Crikvenica Swimming Club was founded in 1932, and generations of swimmers, water-polo players and coaches have grown up around this site. The swimming area is therefore part of the town’s sporting memory as well as a place for recreation. Crikvenica’s water-polo tradition is also associated with Olympic champion Karlo Stipanić, who gained his first sporting experience beside his home sea.
Summer training sessions, water-polo league matches and the traditional Divlja liga tournament are held here, together with occasional club gatherings and town events. Outside organised activities, visitors can clearly see the simple design of the sea pool, its access steps and the meeting of the sporting enclosure with open water. A waterfront walk can continue towards
Balustrada Beach or through nearby
Stjepan Radic Park.
