Crikvenica - Tos Olive Press

Historic central Crikvenica still preserves individual objects connected with earlier everyday work and production.

The tos stands in the paved area of Preradoviceva Street, arranged as a quieter continuation of Stjepan Radic Square. Displayed before a café, it consists of a large upright stone wheel and a smaller stone press element. Its position among restaurant terraces can make it look decorative, but its form comes from the traditional processing of olives.

The word tos, also used in the form toc, denotes a mill or mechanism in which olives were first crushed and the resulting paste then pressed to separate the oil. Heavy and durable stone components often survived after the original workshop ceased operating. The Crikvenica display is therefore not a complete mill but a clear surviving element of an older working process.

The object recalls that life beside the sea depended on more than fishing and tourism. The Vinodol hinterland supplied the town with agricultural produce, and olives and oil had an important everyday role. The press therefore complements the Town Museum and its account of work, food and the local economy.

No special visit or admission is required because the press is visible from the public space. It fits naturally into a walk from the main square towards the museum, Croatian Defenders Park and the bus station.
